The 3 elements that a leader does to combine well-being and performance

Only 4% of companies survive after 10 years in business. What is the reason for this? Mainly the mindset of the leaders and their skills and competencies required. In today’s world, the leader is agile, he knows how to innovate as much as he knows how to accept the structure. He knows how to combine well-being and performance, for himself, for his team, for his organization.

Here are 3 must-haves from today’s leader:

  1. Gather
  2. Dare to think differently
  3. Have the courage to act differently

Small note: I use the notion of today’s leader a lot, in general 😊 let’s let tomorrow’s leader do it. I think if you learn how to manage today, you’ll be ready for tomorrow!

1. Gather

Here it is the opposite of “divide and rule”. Ouste the boys club, the girls club, the sports gang , the buying gang, the production gang , etc.
In other words: simply come together. Accept your differences.

Invitation to reflection

Of course, you have preferences and judgments, that’s normal. If you feel like it, make the following reflection:

  • To what extent, honestly, do you favour one group over another?

The purpose of this reflection is to allow you to realize that your natural affinities are probably towards people who are similar to you in terms of values or personality.

If this is your case, it is completely normal.

Simply, today’s leader goes further.

To rally performance and well-being, today’s leader is agile and surrounds himself with all genres and styles. This requires a little work on him 😉 He must learn to:

    • communicate otherwise;
    • to allow different ideas to emerge;
    • managing diversity;
    • Accepting oneself and others more;
    • stop being afraid of losing control.

If you are interested in the topic, register for the asynchronous online training “Communicating differently”. It will allow you to develop your ability to be understood, your listening, your empathy and to have difficult conversations more easily. Once registered, you have lifetime access to the training: updates to the video clips, manual and activities included.

2. Dare to think differently

I don’t know what image of the management role you have in mind.

Here are some popular beliefs from different eras of management:

    • The manager must have the answers to complex problems.
    • The manager is ultimately responsible.
    • As a manager, I have to make the important decisions.
    • Teams must be involved at all levels.
    • The effectiveness of a manager is measured by his or her ability to be obeyed.
    • The manager is a thoughtful and systematic planner.
    • The manager cannot get too involved, otherwise he is “micro”.

Invitation to reflection

    • What are your beliefs about the management role?
    • Which of these beliefs limit your action?
    • Which of these beliefs are helpful? (not only for you, but for the organization)
    • What are some new beliefs you could create?

This exercise comes from the online training “Manage and Lead”. If you want to think differently, it’s important to know today’s management skills and different leadership styles with their impact. This is exactly what the Manage and Lead training allows you to do in addition to helping you understand why there is a dissonance between the management role you have known and the role necessary in today’s world.

Here are some appropriate beliefs for today’s leader.

The agile leader of our time is able to be as strategic as he is connected to operations. He has this balance, he has this concrete side. This is not “micro”, this is reality.

    • I am able to set up indicators that allow me to stay connected to operations.
    • When I visit operations, I manage myself, I don’t interfere with myself. I’m learning, I’m staying open. I take advantage of this to detect learning opportunities, development opportunities.
    • I understood that taking care of myself was key, and that included managing my time.
    • I make sure that my strategic ideas are transformed into action.

In other words, in order to combine well-being and performance, he manages performance. He ensures that projects and operations are efficient, productive and relevant. He has indicators, they observe them, he has time to take a step back and see the opportunities.

3. Have the courage to act differently

The most successful leaders have understood that you have to do things differently, and smartly.

They are the ones who make the “base” as much as possible.

Let’s take a concrete example, they don’t spend the day in Zoom meetings. They give themselves time out. They are preparing.

This pandemic we are experiencing is extraordinary for everyone to take it up a notch.
And taking it up a notch means doing better what we were all already doing well, or not so well.

Today’s leader has understood that:

    • If you have a bad performance, you don’t have bad results, in today’s world, you have a failure.
    • If you have a decent performance, you don’t have correct results, in today’s world you have bad results.
    • When you have a great performance, you don’t have great results, you have decent results.

If you want great results, you need to deliver exceptional performance on your own!

That’s the world today.

Level of permormance VS results you want to achieve - Unique coaching

Invitation to reflection

  • What do you need to achieve the level of performance you want to achieve?
  • What “basic” elements do you know and don’t currently apply?
    • Yes, the basics as in drinking water, eating well, playing sports, saying no, managing your time intelligently, connecting with others, having fun.
    • What do you need to integrate ONE element? If you answer “Manage my time better,” that’s a start. Start with that. And the online training “Increase your energy ” will help you do just that. You will learn to set your limits as well as to make a diagnosis of your energy losses. Click to see the details.

Conclusion

Did you know that if you’re torn between performance and well-being, it’s because you have to get both?
Because business performance without human well-being is no more positive in the long term than human well-being at the expense of business performance.

Today’s leader rallies both: he brings people together, he accepts, he dares, he has the courage and he is accompanied.

Go! You are able to 😊
