How do you find motivation?

Sometimes I look for my motivation… And you? Generally it is not far away, it is a question of taking the right actions and making the right decisions to be motivated. Here are some elements that allow you to find your motivation and answer “How do I find motivation?”

This article is about decisions, action, and motivation.

The Truth About Motivation

I’ll throw it at you right away, at the beginning… motivation does not come automatically:) You noticed it, didn’t you?

If that were the case, I would attack the tasks that I don’t like more easily. In fact, I could sit quietly in my favorite chair, with a book and wait for the motivation to do things. What a dream! 🙂

However, that’s not how it happens. Here’s the truth about motivation:

Motivation requires decision, vitality, and persistence.

How do you find motivation?

For my part, I’ve been dreaming for a long time of being automatically motivated to tidy up the house. However, I prefer to read quietly or play with my son.

Except that I make the choice (decision) to tidy up the house as early as possible in my day (energy), because by doing this, I feel good and free to read and play.

As soon as I start tidying up the house (effort), I give myself a small goal, like a task or a room to tidy up and suddenly, I start to have other ideas, to add a room and I say to myself : while we’re at it…. Go on!

Step #1 to Find Motivation: Make a Decision

In life, as in a management role, it is not possible to avoid making decisions. So I can confirm that you are capable of making decisions and that you probably do it every day!

Perhaps without realizing it, you have goals and are moving towards them.

So, to be motivated to achieve something, whether it’s a personal project, get a promotion, change jobs, become a better manager, you need a clear goal and an action plan.

To be in action on a decision, you need a direction and a plan.

Plus, your decision will be all the more motivating if it’s aligned with something you really want. It must be in line with your personal or organizational goals, in line with your aspirations!

Step #2 to Find Motivation: Manage Your Energy

First, as soon as you take action on your decision, you will generate energy. That’s the first key.

And as crazy as it sounds, it’s totally true that it gives you energy to start with the tasks you enjoy the least first. In addition, alternating physical and mental work provides energy.

So, if you work in an office, you’re relatively sedentary in your work (and even if you’re running from meeting to meeting all day!), getting up and going to talk to someone are two simple actions you can do that instantly provide energy.

Then the other thing to watch out for is your thoughts.

I spent almost a year working every other weekend. If every time I had sat down at my desk I had said to myself: ahhhh how nice the weather is outside, it would be so good to be there, rather than working here!

What do you think would have happened from those days? I tell you, and confirm it to you in fact, that they were not productive!

As a result, there is a link between decisions and energy.

By consciously choosing to be in action towards my goals, and by putting myself into action, I have more energy.

In addition, another way to generate energy easily is to recognize yourself, congratulate yourself, seek feedback, and celebrate what you are doing.

Joy propels you forward!

Finally, the other element that provides energy is to work with your strengths, your talents. If you feel competent, if you feel like you’re using your potential, you’ll have energy!

Step #3: Maintain the effort until the goal is reached

There are several keys to maintaining the effort until you reach your goal.

  • First, remember why you do what you do. If your purpose is well aligned and connected with your aspirations, it will motivate you to see it. Keep them in custody!
  • Then, create a work plan to avoid downtime. If you feel immobilized in your project, or in the action, it is a safe bet that you lack clarity on the steps to be taken. Are they too big, too vague? Vagueness paralyzes. Break your work down into small steps, adjust along the way.
  • Then, develop the skills necessary to achieve your goals.
  • Finally, surround yourself with people to share experiences and successes. Make those around you a motivator. Join a community of like-minded people.

In conclusion

To conclude, motivation may not come by itself, but it is certainly accessible to everyone!

Direction + Effort + Persistence = Motivation

The essential tools: a vision, a plan, a decision, using your strengths, taking care of yourself, surrounding yourself and recognizing yourself.
