Common problems that are an obstacle to achieving your goals

  • A vague definition of the goals to be achieved
  • Poor priority and time management
  • Lack of communication about the link between priorities and objectives

So, how can you better achieve your goals?

1. Better define your goals

The key here is to start at the end. This may sound simple, but many managers I talk to have difficulty articulating clear results.

A result is tangible, you can see it, measure it.

Then, indicate the reason for this result and outline the actions to be taken, starting with steps.

Like what:

RESULT: I would like the lack of communication not to be a reason given to me to explain a delay.
This result is measurable ✔️

RAISON d’être: less stress on me and the team, more pleasure in working together, no surprises for me, colleagues or clients.

STEPS/ACTIONS: “Receive the deliverables expected from each member of my team every week.”

  • Actions:
    1. Prepare and organize a meeting to clarify this new functioning.
    2. Add a recurring time slot in my agenda every Monday morning to track the progress of files, establish and communicate priorities and deliverables for the week.
    3. Add a point to one-on-one meetings in order to anticipate and help employees deliver.
    4. Ask everyone to send me their progress on key deliverables mid-week so that I can adjust as needed.

2. Better time management

It goes without saying that to succeed in better delivering your goals, you have to plan them. And you’ll be more successful if your planning is relevant and realistic.

If you can’t deliver your goals on time because you have too many emergencies or unforeseen events, you may find it more difficult to say no or manage your schedule.

To manage your time diligently there are a few basics:

Has. The beginning of periods is more conducive to making progress on issues.

For example, the beginning of the week and the mornings. What for? Simply because emergencies arrive more from Tuesday afternoons to Thursdays.

B. Be realistic.

a. First, with the percentage of operations and management (planning, personnel management, follow-up, meetings) that you have to do in a week. Make yourself a typical week!
b. Then, have buffer moments for the unexpected. If you don’t have a buffer in your day or week, it seems unrealistic to me at first.

C. Take the time to estimate the time and learn from your mistakes!

The first task of any file should be to make a work plan. Like the example above!

3. Connecting priorities to the ultimate goal

In order to deliver your goals more successfully, it’s essential to remember the “why” of the goal. Tasks or projects to be delivered are connected to what exactly? What is at stake? To what mission? This helps put into perspective what you’re doing and why you need to do it. (Even the less interesting tasks!)

In short, how does what needs to be done make a difference or create a step toward mission?

Is it a project to develop a new market? To create international expansion? To contribute to society? To the environment? Well-being?

Conclusion

Finally, in order to better deliver your goals, determine a concrete result to achieve and dissect it! Make them steps and then actions. These actions must be as concrete as the goal and lead to a reserved time in your agenda!

Then, if you lack motivation, know that reminding people of the why easily puts even the least interesting tasks or projects into perspective!
