It is built on three levels — short, medium and long term — and each plays a specific role. When just one of these levels is missing, you no longer manage: you react.

I lived it.

As a manager for years, I went through entire periods putting out fires. Not because I was overwhelmed. Because I didn’t have my three levels in place at the same time.

As soon as I integrated them — in my role as a manager, and then in my self-employment — everything changed. My team made better decisions on my own. I was finally making progress on the substantive issues. And when the organizational storms arrived, we held on.

Do you recognize yourself in these situations?

Here are the problems I hear most often:

“I never have time to work on substantive issues unless I overtime.”

“I’m asked to plan for the year, and we experience organizational changes every six months.”

“I feel like I’m just putting out fires.”

“It’s impossible to just keep my to-do list up to date.”

“My team’s results don’t meet my expectations.”

“The processes defined a year ago are already outdated.”

If you recognize yourself in at least one of these points, the question to ask yourself is direct: do you have your three levels of vision clearly defined at the moment?

When I find myself in one of these states — stress, late deliverables, procrastination — it’s almost always because I’ve lost track of one of these levels. The solution is not to work harder. It is to return to it.

Level 1 Leader Vision: The Short Term

The short term is today, this week, this month.

It seems obvious. But having a clear day goal — and getting back to it when the unexpected happens — is a discipline that few managers really apply.

What it changes in concrete terms:

When something unexpected arises, you get back to your priority of the day. You don’t lose focus.

Your agenda reflects your actual workload — not a succession of meetings that leaves no space to deliver.

You delegate what can be delegated. Alone, we move faster. As a team, we go further.

You give yourself the right to say no — and you offer alternatives.

To go further on the management of unforeseen events and priorities on a daily basis:

Managing the unexpected in management: 3 concrete tools

Training — Time and Priority Management

Reflection questions

Do you have a clear objective for today — just one, priority?

Does your schedule leave you time to deliver, or only to talk?

What could you delegate this week?

Level 2 Leader Vision: The Medium Term

The medium term is the next three months, the end of the year, the end of the summer.

This is the level that falls the fastest. Because everyday life takes up all the space.

What I personally apply:

Once a month, I take stock of my medium-term goals and come out with an updated action plan.

I realign myself and modify the plan if necessary. We have the right to change paths. What is non-negotiable is to remain responsible for one’s own goals.

I take advantage of this moment to check the alignment with the long term. Is what I’m doing now getting me closer to where I want to go?

Thus, the medium term transforms a good intention into real movement.

Reflection questions

Do you have any clear goals for the next three months?

When was the last time you took stock of your goals?

Does your action plan today bring you closer to your long-term vision?

Level 3 Leader Vision: The Long Term

The long term is in three or five years. The image of what you want your life or organization to become.

The further back in time the vision, the more likely it is to be blurred. And that’s okay.

For my part, some parts are very clear and others less so. What matters is that this vision inspires you. That it is strong enough to guide your daily decisions — even if it is imperfect.

Some ways to build it:

A mental image. What does your daily life look like in five years?

Words. A short sentence that sums up where you want to go.

A graph, a document, a table. Let your creativity guide you.

And if this vision seems difficult to formulate alone, this is exactly where support makes a difference.

Training — Project Management

Reflection questions

Do you have a clear picture of where you want to be in three to five years?

Does your current vision inspire you — or weigh you down?

Are your day-to-day decisions aligned with this vision?

The 3 levels of vision: one system, not a list

What makes this approach powerful is not each level taken separately.

It’s their interaction.

When all three are in place, your team can align their decisions without waiting for you. You can manage the unexpected without losing focus. And you can build something solid — even in an environment that is constantly changing.

The infographic below summarizes the entire process: from vision to outcome, projects, iteration planning, and retrospective.

Download the infographic illustrating the steps.

To transform your vision into concrete and deliverable projects:

Training — Project Management

What I observe with the managers I coach: some are naturally comfortable in the short term — they excel in action, delivery, day-to-day. Others think instinctively in the long term, but struggle to turn their vision into concrete results. And the medium term? He is often the great forgotten of the three.

The Nova profile allows you to identify at which level you are naturally strong — and where you tend to drop out. It is a concrete starting point to work on your vision as a leader in a targeted, not generic, way.

Discover the Nova profile

Thinking long-term while acting in the short term may seem paradoxical. This is not a contradiction. That’s exactly the job of a leader.

Stay focused on your vision. Be flexible about how to get there.

Frequently asked questions about the vision of a leader

What is a leader’s vision?

A leader’s vision is their ability to set a clear direction — in the short, medium, and long term — and align their decisions and those of their team accordingly. This is not a big abstract statement. It is a concrete management tool that guides priorities on a daily basis.

Why does a leader need to have multiple levels of vision?

Because each level meets a different need. The short term anchors action in everyday life. The medium term ensures progress towards the objectives. The long term gives meaning and guides major decisions. Without all three, we risk exhausting ourselves reacting without ever really moving forward.

How to develop your vision as a leader on a daily basis?

By integrating regular moments of hindsight. A clear goal every morning for the short term. A monthly update on medium-term objectives. And a quarterly or annual review of the long-term vision. It’s not a question of time — it’s a question of discipline.

Can a leader’s vision change?

Yes — and that’s healthy. A rigid vision that does not adapt to reality becomes an obstacle. The idea is to stay anchored in the management while remaining flexible on the way. We change the plan, not necessarily the destination.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

Leader’s vision: 3 levels to master The vision of a leader is not just a big idea for five years from now.
